SPA Industry in cities employs largest north east females all over India: ANALYSIS and STRATEGY for PREVENTION of exploitation.
Recently Helping Hands team sent our members as decoy customers in Spa’s at Gurgaon, Delhi, Goa & Noida, it was an eye opening harsh reality of helplessness of our females in these spas. In many spas, newly migrated from north east states are not regular employees but are kept as on trial for months without salary, they get only 25% of their income from tips given by customers, even have to surrendered tips to the owners.
The most painful observation was to our young naive NE females were serving the customers in a cramped tiny dirty dark poorly dim lighted unhygienic so called rooms having only old bed in dingy rooms…. none of them were not aware of harsh reality of spa jobs when they were told during their training after so much of hype of job skill trainings, salary, glamorous city life, nor have any post care cum monitoring after being sent to cities after ziffy, rushy scrambled so called trainings for few months.
Nor these girls were told about their rights as employees under Wages and Labour Laws nor were aware of basic provisions of sexual harassment act in work places.
As a result, most of them are like lambs in Jurassic park – living in cramped rooms in rent, no rest, no timing’s, cut off from social life, no medical check-up, leading to substances and alcohol addiction, had cases many suicides due to overdose etc regularly.
These pathetic conditions also corroborated by regular complaints of harassment, non-payment of salary, infected with many diseases, even hedonistic strategy of sending only good fair skin females after training in cities under the guise of online jobs interviews or by campus recruitment at these skill training centre’s. It seems connivance of skill training institutions. The latest recent cases of arrest of few cases of arrest of NE females from Lucknow indicate these racket of shipping fair skin NE females to cities, in this case, they took away the mobile phones and kept the away from each other without knowing where are they working. Police raided the place, those females were in custody for weeks as there was no bailers for them, somehow, Helping Hands advocates with RK Mission activists bail them out after several weeks.
Helping Hands is flooded complaints of such exploitation s from all over India from NE females working in spa… we have many cases, where spa employees have please their employers/ boss every day beyond the call of service in order to retain their jobs . It’s a heart wrenching painful sagas of helplessness, woes. Ironically, these females told me that they have also nothing back home also to take out their livelihood.
Helping Hands Research and Reach Out Unit Delhi finally could rope in one of the largest Spa Industry in India – O2, they are employing more than 3500 NE females as Spa workers in Aero city hotels, 5 star hotels all over India , today, we had brain storming discussion on preventive strategy of exploitation in Spa Industry, North India Zonal Head lead by Anupam Bist in my office have formulated the following preventive measures for spa Industry.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES AGAINST SPA INDUSTRY EXPLOITATION’S
1. Look for the company’s website in detail.
2. Contact given number in the website and ask FAQS.
3. Company which follows a proper HR policy. Eg. Salary slips, bank accounts, no cash salary, proper hierarchy, increment, incentives, etc should be preference for joining there.
4. Should not get hired through freelancer. Candidates should be recruited to companies who has employees in the region with proper ID card and employee number and get it verified by their HR head and Helping Hands will also verify it.
5. Candidates should never go for high salary till enough experience, because spa store who offers high salary always make it up through illegal activities.
6. Candidates should always receive offer letter before moving out of hometown to join spa Industry.
7. To ensure the genuineness, ask for offer letter ,always ask soft copy of offer letter on mail and verify if it’s from company mail ID or not.
8. They should check if escorts and TA/DA are provided by the company with proper accommodation in the initial offer letter.
9. Companies who have outlets in Airport/ 5 star hotels are secured than normal spa Salons store own by individuals. Many evil rich people open spas for their personal services only in the guise of business entertainment, escort services etc.
10. Check the number of branches and location and ask any friends or known one in that city for physical verification.
I hope Helping Hands continuous endeavor to salvage our sisters from one of the largest employers in cities will have some impact before they land into the abyss of exploitations…
